Around 425 BC a trireme started from the city of Mendi in Halkidiki bound for a city in today’s southern Greece loaded with thousands of amphorae of wine and food. A strong storm hit the ship and a crack opened in its sides causing it to fill with sea water and sink somewhere off the coast of Alonissos.

The countless scattered ancient amphorae, one on top of the other, in various parts of the seabed, were accidentally discovered in 1985 by a fisherman, Dimitris Mavrikis, off the island of Peristeras, near Alonissos. This is how we reached today and the creation of the Underwater Museum of Alonissos. So, if you want to get a taste of underwater archaeology, all you have to do is dive off the coast of Alonissos and take a tour accompanied by experienced divers above this unique find. It is an exciting experience to dive into the sea to see Greek antiquities up close. Your experience is completed by the Public Information and Awareness Center of the Underwater Museum in Alonissos, where you will receive all the necessary information about the ancient shipwrecks, while the possibility of a virtual tour with augmented reality technologies is offered.
