Piestany, an idyllic wellness island in the heart of Slovakia, is just 45 minutes away from Bratislava, offering a unique experience. The picturesque town in the Trnava region, with approximately 28,000 residents, is called Piestany, derived from the word “Piesok,” meaning “sand.” Built along the banks of the Vah River, Spa Island creates a natural oasis in the city center. The island features thermal baths, luxurious hotels, wellness centers, and beautiful parks. With ten thermal springs, it serves as a fairytale destination connected to the city center via an impressive pedestrian bridge. A bronze statue of a man breaking his crutch, symbolizing healing through the miraculous thermal baths, stands as a testament to the island’s therapeutic wonders.

The Story of the Spa Town

The fascinating history of Piestany and the Slovak spa town unfolds from prehistoric times, as evidenced by archaeological findings, including the famous sculpture ‘Aphrodite of Moravany.’ The name ‘Pescan’ appears in written records in 1113, but the true heyday of the spa town occurred in the 19th century. Emperor Leopold I protected Piestany as a spa in 1682, a pioneering event in Europe. With a rich history, the town passed through various noble families, and the spa was renovated in 1820 in neoclassical style, named ‘Napoleon spa.’ The spa was redeveloped again after 1889, enhancing its reputation as a world-class establishment. Artists and aristocrats, such as Beethoven, visited the thermal baths, reaching its peak in 1917 when three European monarchs met at the Thermia Palace hotel for strategic discussions.

There, Empress Sissy indulged herself in moments of relaxation.

Empress Elisabeth of Austria was one of the most influential personalities to visit Piestany. The incomparable Sissy repeatedly enjoyed the beneficial healing waters and mud baths, understanding their therapeutic properties and anti-inflammatory effects. Moreover, the Empress suffered from tuberculosis, and the warm water of the medicinal baths represented relief for her.

In the lush green area next to the baths, a statue of Sissy stands tall, with her characteristic long, braided hair.
